History

During the time when the Rochdale Canal was abandoned, parts of the original line in Sowerby Bridge were filled in for a road widening scheme. In order to restore the canal, a tunnel was built under the road and a single deep lock provided upstream of, and in place of the former locks 3 and 4.

Operation

Due to its extreme depth, boater operation of this lock is not permitted. Passage is controlled by a lock keeper.[1]
